Solaris 10 other goodies  0 e

Posted on April 29th, 2005. About s10 stories, Other features.

I saw an Infodoc recently that insisted on some additional instructions to have MySQL running on Solaris 10. Quite amazing… Then I thought that I would put out a document that would list some of the nice S10 features that are NOT often talked about… Here is a list with some comments. Tell me if something you are really using is missing. These features are available on the 3 platforms : SPARC, x86, x64 ( Opteron ).

Java & DTrace, Solaris Internals & Chip Multi-threading  0 e

Posted on April 28th, 2005. About s10 stories.

3 good news/reads :

- DTrace now has some Java capabilities. Full built-in Java support is not yet there but one can already do some tracing.
Adam Leventhal’s blog
Bryan Cantrill’s blog

- Solaris Internals 2 - the sequel of the reference Solaris book - is in preparation and should be released this year. Updated for S10.
Jim Mauro’s blog

- Found a very interesting paper on Chip Multi-threading and how Solaris 10 can take advantage of it. Quite a good read if you want to know why this is the future of CPUs.

Security blueprint : Integrating BART and the Solaris Fingerprint Database in the Solaris 10 Operating System  0 e

Posted on April 20th, 2005. About Docs, Security, Blueprints.

Another nice cookbook from Glenn Brunette, whose blog won a place in my links. Note that if you are already familiar with the Basic Audit & Reporting Tool ( BART ) and the Fingerprint DB, you will probably find the most interesting part in the “caveats” section. Both tools have some inherent limitations that are good to know if you use them. Misusing security tools is worse than not using them.

ZFS : new commands but no date  0 e

Posted on April 15th, 2005. About s10 stories, ZFS.

I found two interesting tidbits inEric Schrock’s last weblog entry :

- ZFS commands have been “completely rewritten”. Again !
- He cannot give a date for the official release. Sad. We’ll need to keep our rumoured unannounced date : Update 2, around September 05.

Dtrace : Advanced doc  0 e

Posted on April 15th, 2005. About Docs, DTrace.

According to Bryan Cantrill, it seems that people are reaching the limits of the Dtrace Admin Guide. That is why he and his two Dtrace buddies made a new presentation called Dtrace : tips, tricks & gotchas…

So if you finished finding the Dtrace Administration Guide useful, you may want to go their next presentation slides (warning : yes these are slides so don’t expect a nice format full of nice explanations).
